Public Activities
First elected to the seat of Salisbury in 1979, and later to the seat of Ramsay in 1985, he was variously Minister for Industry, Trade and Technology, Agriculture, Fisheries and Ethnic Affairs. He became Premier in 1992 following Bannon's resignation, but the political aftermath of the State Bank collapse made it virtually impossible for Labor to retain government. He continued as Leader of the Opposition after Labor's electoral defeat by the Liberal Party in 1993, but left Parliament in 1994. After politics he completed a PhD in sociolinguistics from the University of Adelaide, and later served as CEO of World Vision Australia (1997-2003). In December 2014, he was ordained a priest in St Peter's Cathedral, Adelaide.
