Committee Function
A Select Committee of the Legislative Council has been established to inquire into and report on Community Safety and Emergency Services in South Australia, including -
1. The status of funding, resources and policy initiatives for community safety and emergency services in South Australia, viz:
(a) the South Australian Police;
(b) the South Australian Ambulance Service;
(c) the Country Fire Service;
(d) the State Emergency Service;
(e) the Volunteer Marine Rescue SA;
(f) the Metropolitan Fire Service;
(g) the South Australia Fire and Emergency Services Commission; and
(f) the rescue components of -
i. Surf Life Saving South Australia (SLSSA);
ii. South Australian Police Rescue; and
iii. the State Rescue Helicopter service.
2. The process leading up to the creation of the new Community Safety Directorate and analysis of the structure and operations of the Directorate;
3. The historical and current adequacy of the Emergency Services Levy to meet emergency services funding and resource requirements;
4. The accuracy and adequacy of crime statistics and other key performance indicators as a measure of community safety perceptions and realities; and
5. Any other related matter.
IA. Inquire into and report on the Cherryville fire in order to -
1. Determine the circumstances of ignition and immediate CFS response;
2. Evaluate the effectiveness of the deployment and procurement of aerial assets;
3. Assess the “fire danger season” process and other decision making processes in relation to imposing interim fire bans or other fire controls; and
4. Evaluate the communication of emergency response.
